 Keeping your Cool

  - The two places illustrated are where all the cooling water passes.

  - Any restriction at these spots can add a lot to overheating troubles.

  - The inlet manifold water port has a lip at its lower edge which should be ported out to gasket size. Otherwise the water flow hits a sharp obstruction causing turbulence and back pressure in the water flow.

  - At the rear of the block, poor casting detail can lead to a partial blockage of the water way. The picture shows a patch of metal in the bottom of the rear block water passage.

  - Also, the head gasket doesn't line up well with the passage, and a trim of about 2mm off the inside edge of the gasket at the port can be very useful. A 1/4 inch round rasp is a suitable tool for cleaning out the blockages from the passages and the inlet manifold.
